Utpala - original

Utpala - is a Sanskrit word for a rare blue lotus flower, calligraphed here phonetically in classical Tibetan Uchen script.

The inspiration for this piece firstly came from this Japanese printed Kouzo paper, which has the appearance of lotus-leaves on the surface of a pond.

Then wanting to experiment with new ink colours of Fine Mica Coliro ink. I chose a blue lustre, which pops out like an illuminated manuscript, in contrast to the beautifully soft absorbent texture of the Kouzo paper.
